London Airports

London is by far the busiest aviation centre in the world. Around 130 million passengers pass through London’s airports each year.

It is served by five main airports:, London Heathrow Airport, London Gatwick Airport, London Stansted Airport, London Luton Airport and  London City Airport.

 

Heathrow Airport

London Heathrow Airport (LHR) is one of the busiest airports in the world, with more than 65 million passengers per year. It is the primary hub of BMI and British Airways, and is a base for Virgin Atlantic Airways. Heathrow is located approximately 20 miles (32km) to the west of central London. The average journey time by car (taxi or private hire transfer) from Heathrow airport to central London is approximately 30-45 minutes. It has five terminals (terminal 2 under constriction). There are fast and convenient transfers between the terminals; Terminals 1 and 3 are a short walk from each other, while terminals 4 and 5 are served by free trains.

Gatwick Airport

London Gatwick Airport (LGW) is the UK’s second largest airport and the busiest single-runway airport in the world. It serves more than 200 destinations in 90 countries for around 33 million passengers a year. The airport is a base for scheduled operators Aer Lingus, British Airways (BA), EasyJet, Flybe, Monarch Airlines and Virgin Atlantic, as well as charter airlines including Thomas Cook Airlines and Thomson Airways. Gatwick Airport is located approximately 30 miles (48km) to the south of central London. The average journey time by car (taxi or private hire transfer) from Gatwick airport to central London is approximately 60-80 minutes. It has two terminals – North and South. Transfers between terminals at Gatwick are facilitated by shuttle trains, which run every few minutes 24 hours a day. The journey takes just two minutes and the service is free of charge.

Stansted Airport

London Stansted Airport (STN) is the UK's third busiest airport, currently serving around 19 million passengers a year.

Many leading low-cost scheduled airlines fly from and to Stansted. Stansted Airport is located 40miles (64km) to the north-east of London. The average journey time by car (taxi or private hire transfer) from Stansed airport to central London is approximately 60-80 minutes.

Luton Airport

London Luton Airport handles about 10 million passengers a year. The airport serves as a base for EasyJet, Monarch Airlines, Thomson Airways, Ryanair. The vast majority of the routes served are within Europe, although there are some charter and scheduled routes to destinations in Northern Africa and Asia. It is located approximately 35 miles (56km) to the north of London.

London City Airport

London City Airport is the UK's leading business airport serving over 30 destinations across the UK, Europe and the USA, with connections to the rest of the world through major European hubs

The only airport actually in London, London City Airport is less than a mile from world-class events venue ExCeL London; just two miles from the site of the 2012 Olympic Games; three miles from Canary Wharf and six miles from London’s financial district, the City of London. The airport is especially popular among the business community due to its convenient location and ease of use with faster check-in times than any other London airport.
